The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will receive $348,002 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO program, which will go toward low-income students and first-generation college students.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) also secured more funds for the program for fiscal year 2021. The FY21 Appropriations bill will put $1.1 billion in the TRIO program, according to a press release from Cuellar.
“It is critical that we provide academic support to some of our most vulnerable students on their journey to graduation during these unprecedented times,” Cuellar said. “This investment will lay the foundation they need to graduate, continue their education, and start successful careers. As a senior Member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to work hard in ensuring the next generation has access to a quality education and the tools to drive our economy forward."
Cuellar thanked President Guy Bailey and the rest of the university’s staff for their efforts in supporting disadvantaged students, along with Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Filemon Vela.
