A combination of $296 million in state and federal funding will provide public safety improvements in Texas, including bullet resistant vests for police officers and programs to reduce violence in schools.
Fifty-two organizations in 36 different states have been awarded a total of $35 million from the Economic Development Authority, with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley receiving funds, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will receive $348,002 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO program, which will go toward low-income students and first-generation college students.
About 41,800 jobs have been lost in Cameron and Hildalgo counties, which after the COVID-19 economic lockdown has the highest unemployment rate in years.
