The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will receive funding to help replace families' food that was lost or destroyed by Hurricane Hanna.
Six counties have met the criteria to receive benefits from the HHSC's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is the program that received the funding.The HHSC will be able to help residents in Brooks, Hidalgo, Kenedy, McMullen, Starr and Willacy counties, according to a press release.
Participants in the SNAP program won't have to take action to receive replacements. Those registered in the program will automatically receive a regular allotment of benefits to their Lone Star cards to replace their lost food.
Those who are part of the SNAP program in 26 other eligible counties can request food replacements.
"As our communities rebuild from the damage caused by Hurricane Hanna, we are working to help ensure that Texans can continue to provide healthy meals for their families," Gov. Greg Abbott said in the press release. "I thank our federal partners for quickly approving this request and for their collaboration as we help Texans recover in the aftermath of this storm."
