Hidalgo County and city of Mission was awarded a total of $149,000 in Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding for the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program on Jan. 31.

The Housing Authority of the County of Hidalgo will receive $95,306 for its FSS program and the remaining $54,456 will go to the Mission Housing Authority. The FSS program is designed to help families “increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies,” hud.gov cites

The money received from the HUD will be used to support the FSS programs in Hidalgo and Mission by hiring and training service coordinators that support family members on the path to financial independence.

The FSS program is “very important because we don’t want the government to support people for the rest of their lives, we want the government to provide that catalyst so somebody can get up and be self-sufficient,” Congressman Henry Cuellar told Valley Central
