The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court voted to provide $63 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.
The funds, which are from the $151 million allocated to Hidalgo County as part of the $11.2 billion from the Cares Act earmarked for Texas, will provide financial relief for local municipalities.
“The whole state received $11.2 billion,” state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (D-McAllen) told The Monitor. “Of those $11.24 billion, 55% went to the state and 45% went to the counties and cities. And that was (dictated) by the U.S. Treasury; not the state.”
The court also voted to distribute the funds at a rate of $110 per capita, or per person, for cities home to more than 30,000 people such as McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, Weslaco and San Juan.
The county’s other 16 municipalities will receive money at a rate of $80 per capita, according to the Progress Times.
As of May 23, Texas reported 54,509 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 1,506 deaths. Hidalgo County has 482 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
