Federal funding to combat drug trafficking in Starr County ended June 30, due to a decision by the executive board of the South Texas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.
Starr County Judge Eloy Vera told Channel Five News that a letter from the board gives no insight into why the June 8 decision was made.
According to the letter, obtained by Channel Five News, the board met in executive decision June 3 and made the decision to suspend funding through the end of the year, when the board can decide whether or not to restore it.
Vera said the county lacks the resources to make up on its own for the loss in funding.
"We have a policy in the county that any grants or programs that we have whenever they run out of funding or they cease to exist, then of course the county also stops the program, because we don't have it in the budget," Vera told Channel Five News.
