City of Mission issued the following announcement.
It has become an uplifting tradition in the City of Mission to give a Thanksgiving meal to those in need. Mission Crime Stoppers is once again hosting their annual Turkey Giveaway, with COVID-19 precautions in place. Officers plan to hand out more than 200 meals to needy families on Thursday Nov. 19.
“We began this program simply as a way of giving back to our community. It’s been a challenging year, so we are excited to bring some joy to these families during this pandemic,” Robert Rodriguez, Mission Crime Stoppers Coordinator said. “We have partnered up with the City of Mission and the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank to make this holiday an unforgettable one for families that may have gone without a Thanksgiving dinner.”
The meals have already been prepared and organized and Mission Crime Stoppers will host the Turkey Giveaway in drive-thru fashion to promote social distancing. Citizens are asked to open up their trunk so officers can simply place the food box inside with limited contact. The families are preselected based on need by Mission CISD and the Community Development Block Grant Program. They were awarded food pick-up vouchers in advance. Face masks are required. This is NOT open to the public.
