There were three African American students enrolled in Edcouch-Elsa ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 25% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Edcouch-Elsa ISD schools welcomed 4,366 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, African American students comprised 0.1% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Edcouch-Elsa ISD roughly covers schools within Hidalgo County and has a main office in Edcouch.

Among the nine schools in Edcouch-Elsa ISD schools, Jorge R. Gutierrez Early Childhood Center recorded the highest enrollment of African American students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of one student.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
