A&M University issued the following announcement.
Texas A&M University’s Silver Taps, one of the school’s oldest traditions, will be held virtually Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 10:30 p.m. to honor a student who recently passed away.
Honored will be Victoria Annette Walker, a senior management major from Farmersville, Texas, who died Aug. 30.
Because of health and safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, university officials have decided to hold the event in a virtual format. The event will be simulcast on KAMU-TV and Texas A&M’s YouTube channel. Links and directions to the simulcast can be found on Texas A&M’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as Traditions Council’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Silver Taps is held the first Tuesday of each month from September-April, if necessary, following a student’s death. It is one of the final tributes held for any current professional, graduate or undergraduate student who has passed during the year.
The ceremony was originally observed in front of Old Main until it burned in 1912, and then in front of Goodwin Hall until 1918 when it was moved to the present site in front of the Academic Building, when the event can be held in person.
The solemn ceremony will feature the Ross Volunteers and Corps of Cadets buglers, recognize honored families and friends and contain customized tributes to the fallen Aggies.
