City of Missouri issued the following announcement on Jan. 17.
Continuing its tradition of celebrating culture and diversity in the community, the “Show Me City” will host its Sixth Annual Black History Month Celebrations on Friday, Jan. 31, starting at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The FREE festivities will begin on Jan. 31 with a Black History Month Kickoff at the City Hall Complex, 1522 Texas Pkwy., from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy live musical performances by Jazz Great Dean James, Regional Jazz Saxophonist Theresa Grayson and Zydeco Legend Keith Frank. The evening will also feature the first ever MCTX Africa Bazaar, family – oriented activities such as bounce houses and a game truck, and a cultural tasting where guests will be able to sample Cajun and soul foods prepared by local restaurateurs Micheaux’s Diner & Catering, Inc. and The Greatest BBQ.
Then, on Feb. 29, the City will host its traditional program in the Community Center featuring a profound presentation on the “150th Anniversary of the ratification of the 15 Amendment: African Americans and the Vote” by Dr. Alexander Brown Ed.D, a lifetime activist and leader of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. The program will also feature the Second Annual Youth Poetry Slam with spoken word performances by students from across the region that will be judged and moderated by Andre “Self the Poet” Burrell, a nationally ranked poet whose style is equal parts intelligent, captivating, and profound.
“We’re proud to see that our Black History Month tradition continues to recognize African-American culture and accomplishments showcasing the tremendous historical contributions of local legends, including our area youth,” said City Manager Anthony J. Snipes. “This year’s events will be top-notch and we look forward to once again hosting residents, stakeholders and visitors from across the region and state.”
Black History Month partners include the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), CenterPoint Energy, Houston Community College (HCC), H-E-B, D-MARS.com, Fort Bend County, Kroger, Linebarger Groggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, The Greatest BBQ and Micheaux’s Diner & Catering, Inc.
