Gov. Greg Abbott has asked for disaster assistance after multiple counties were hit with Hurricane Hanna this summer.

Abbott issued a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, stating that the agricultural industry was devastated by the natural disaster, which made landfall on July 25.

He’s asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to step in and assist Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, Starr, Willacy and Zapata counties, along with others who have suffered losses because of Hurricane Hanna. He hopes the USDA will provide federal help such as emergency loans for local producers.

“Hurricane Hanna produced damaging weather conditions which substantially affected producers and caused severe production losses,” Abbott wrote. “These producers are in need of this assistance to return to normal operations. As we continue to assess production losses or losses to quality in the other affected counties, I reserve the right to request that USDA extend its disaster designation to additional counties in Texas.”
